Pulitzer Prize
The Pulitzer Prize is a U.S. award for achievements in newspaper and online journalism,
literature, and musical composition. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of
American (Hungarian-born) publisher Joseph Pulitzer, and is administered by Columbia
University in New York City. Prizes are awarded yearly in twenty-one categories. In twenty of
these, each winner receives a certificate and a US$10,000 cash award. The winner in the public
service category of the journalism competition is awarded a gold medal.
The 2012 Pulitzer Prizes were awarded on April 16, 2012 by the Pulitzer Prize Board for work
during the 2011 calendar year.

The Miami Herald “for its exposure of deadly abuses and lax state oversight in Florida’s assistedliving facilities for the elderly and mentally ill.
The New York Times “for the work of Danny Hakim and Russ Buetttner that revealed rapes,
beatings and more than 1,200 unexplained deaths over the past decade of developmentally
disabled people in New York State group homes”.

Man Booker Prize
