CLAT 2015 Exam Analysis
CLAT 2015 was conducted by Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University (RMLNLU) on May 10, 2015 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. This paper was a far cry from the pattern of the last year’s paper in certain sections. The difficulty level has gone up in comparison to CLAT 2014. There were surprises in every section. However, care was taken to ensure that students were not short of time given the fact that it was the first time that CLAT is being conducted as a Computer Based Test
The paper had a total of 200 questions spread across five sections - English, GK, Elementary Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude. Each correct attempt would get 1 mark while each incorrect attempt would attract a negative score of 0.25 marks.

Unlike last year, this section was not the easiest section of the paper. In fact, the difficulty level of this section increased marginally. There were many new types of questions in the paper. However, the questions were not difficult. Here are the highlights of this section :
One Reading Comprehension passage (450-500 words) which was followed by 10 questions. The passage was based on Economics.
One short paragraph followed by 2 questions of Comprehension. This is a new type of question.
Three questions each based on Phrase Replacement, Spot the error (sets of sentences) and Analogies.
There were about 11 questions of various types which tested the vocabulary skills of the students. There were new variants in these questions.
Another 5 questions based on Vocabulary were a spin-off on the Fill in the Blanks. In these questions, there were a set of sentences in which each sentence had two options and one needed to be chosen according to the given context.
Cloze Test has made its appearance in Law Entrance tests after a very long time. There were 6 blanks to be filled in with appropriate words. The sequence of the questions was in not in the same sequence as the blanks.
There were two Para Summary type questions
Unlike last year, there were no questions based on Para Jumbles, Idioms, Spellings and Foreign Language Phrases. The overall difficulty level of this section was easy to moderate. The surprise element in the questions could have made one a little circumspect while answering the questions.
A good attempt in this section would be about 34 to 36. We believe a net score of 31 - 33 is a good score.
Logical Reasoning:
This is another section in which the questions were more difficult as compared to the previous year. Like last year, this section was dominated by Analytical Reasoning. Here are the highlights of the questions.
There was one fairly difficult set with of 5 questions that most have not attempted.
There were 2 sets of “assignment†type questions – one having 8 questions and the other 5. Some students found some of these questions tough. However 7 to 8 questions from this group was eminently do able.
There were 5 questions of Coding Decoding which was a very easy set.
Two questions of “variant†of Blood Relations and about 4 to 5 of Directions.
In the Verbal part of the reasoning section there were
Five questions of Deductive Logic (Statement-Conclusion type)
Three questions each of Logical Consistency and Fact, Inference & Judgment.
There were three questions of a new type called “ Data Sufficiency†in the Verbal logic section. There were Overall, the difficulty level of this section was moderate to difficult. Team LST believes that an attempt of 30 to 32 with a net score of 28 to 30 is a very good score.
Elementary Mathematics:
This was probably the section that has changed the most in terms of the level of difficulty. This section of the paper had 20 questions. Most of the questions were application-based questions. There were questions from Arithmetic, Number System, Algebra, Probability and Permutations and Combinations. The biggest surprise however is the Data Interpretation questions that has been introduced this year. Though the questions were very simple, the very fact that Data Analysis appeared in the paper is enough to upset the students. As compared to the previous year, this section has seen the maximum increase in the level of difficulty. The difficulty level of this section was moderate to difficult.
An attempt of 11 to 12 questions with a net score of 9 to 10 can be termed as a good score.
General Knowledge:
This was one of those sections which did not surprise the students much as it was almost in line with the last year’s exam pattern. This year too the section was dominated by Current Affairs. Close to 70 % of the questions was from Current Events. In Static GK there were questions based on History, Economy and Science. The rest of the questions were based on Science & Technology, Personalities, Business, Awards, Sports and Indian & International Organizations. This section was reported to be of easy to moderate level of difficulty.
An attempt of 37 to 40 and a net score of 30 to 32 was very much on the card.
Legal Aptitude
Although the pattern of this section has changed, there was no change in the level of difficulty in comparison to the previous year’s paper. This section had the following composition

18 Questions of Legal Reasoning
10 Questions of Assertion-Reason type.
The majority of the Legal Knowledge questions were based on current legal affairs and general legal concepts. The topics of static legal knowledge covered in this section were Constitution (2), Family Law (1), Contracts (3) and IPC (1). There were no questions on International Law and Torts. The majority of Legal Reasoning questions were based on static legal concepts. The students reported that these questions were simple and were neither lengthy nor time-consuming. As another deviation from previous CLAT papers, there were not many questions based on Articles and Sections of Constitution and other important legislations.
The assertion reason type questions appearing as a part of the Legal Aptitude section must have been a surprise to many. These questions had the potential to bring down the net score in this section.
An attempt of 42 to 45 and a net score of 33 to 35 was definitely on.
Estimated Cut-offs for Different Law Schools The estimated cut-off for the top three law schools should be 135+ and for the remaining CLAT Law Schools should be 120+.
